The Impacts of Gene Therapy...

Gene therapy carries the promise of cures for many disorders and diseases like cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, heart disease, AIDS, and cancer.  With its potential to eliminate and prevent these hereditary diseases, it's almost looked at as medical magic.  Although, with all this excitement over a possible new treatment for so many problems, a social, political, and economic impact always follows.  Throughout history, new medicines have been expanding the gift of longevity, a long life fulfilled, but usually there's always a bad side to accompany all the good.

There's no question that this topic has had a major impact on the world.  Pharmaceutical companies are in a race to discover the next genetic cure for diseases, as the demand for cures is growing and growing and technological discoveries are being revealed everyday.  Even the government takes an interest in developing the search of answers for genetic testing, funding money for companies that put gene therapy at the top of their list.  As can be assumed, pharmaceutical companies and smaller companies that do research in this field would be the ones to benefit.  Also, the people in which these treatments would help would also benefit.  They will have had their disease cured or at least have it managed where before it couldn't be helped in any way.  But there are people would wouldn't benefit from such things.  For example, there have been some fatal cases in which people who have signed up for these experimental treatments were killed by the process instead of helped.  This makes society question if gene therapy is more of a villain than a hero.

This video to the right is a great example of how gene therapy could be a hero.  In this video, it talks about how scientists took colorblind monkeys and injected genetically modified viruses into them in the hopes that they might be able to see all spectrums of color.  If this can be done with monkeys, maybe there is hope for humans, not just in area of seeing in full color, but in many different aspects of bodily inabilities.  These are the hopes for the future ----------->

This next video to the left is an example of how gene therapy could specifically impact the lives of all humans.  In this video, a boy that is born blind has viruses carrying a certain type of protein injected into one of his eyes, allowing him the ability to see again.  Due to successes like this, it can be said that this topic area has made significant changes in public perception of science due to biotechnological advances.  It shows that this kind of treatment can work, and has the economy investing in this area to see just what it can do.
